Looking for information about the gamedev industry? Looking for Saskatchewan tech and game talent? Want to know about events? Need interviews and experts? We’ve got you covered! We are Saskatchewan’s largest tech community and we’re devoted to game development. If you need to know what’s happening in Saskatchewan, get the Sask perspective on the tech and game fields, or just get expertise on tech, gaming or game development, we can make it happen.
Community
SaskGameDev (formerly known as ReginaGameDev) is a community of almost 400 members (as of Feb 2021), across Saskatchewan. It includes a range from hobbyists to professional game developers and studio heads. We have members in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Yorkton and more. Members include at least a dozen registered game development studios, as well as freelancing professionals. Membership is free and open to anyone interested in game development in Saskatchewan.
Experts
Members include professional programmers, artists (both 2D and 3D), game designers, writers, graphic designers, sound engineers, producers, website developers, entrepreneurs, managers, teachers, professors, scientists, researchers, and more. We have members with expertise in not only game development and its many facets, but web development, VR/AR, networking, AI, digital security, education, and more. Despite the fledgling industry in Saskatchewan we have members with 10+ years experience in the game development industry and members with AAA studio experience.
Events
We hold numerous events throughout the year. From monthly meetups, currently virtual, but previously held in Saskatoon and Regina. We help organize the annual Global Game Jam Regina site, part of the international Global Game Jam event. We also hold workshops on various subjects (past events have included introductory workshops for Unity, Unreal and Godot game development, sound editing, marketing asset development and game development entrepreneurship). We’ve also worked with the Saskatchewan Science Centre, the North Central Hacker Dojo, Regina District Industry Education Council and numerous school divisions to provide educational workshops for children introducing coding and game development skills from ages 5 and up as well as career counseling.
Projects
Members are working on wide-ranging projects. From unreleased hobby prototypes to learn skills, to internationally-selling multi-platform award-winning games on the cutting edge of technology. Our members have mobile releases on the Google Play Store, Apple’s App Store, PC and Mac releases through the Steam store, Itch.io, the Epic Store, and soon console releases too!. Take a look at our Games page to see what our members are up to!
Opportunities
While our industry is just getting started, that means there’s lots of opportunity for growth. We have numerous start ups building a base for success in Saskatchewan. Our members are passionate about the game development and are pushing their skills and talent to build a workforce that will take our industry to the next level. We help connect people to jobs, form teams, learn about events and other opportunities to help them develop as individuals, as teams and as businesses. Change happens rapidly in tech, so we’re always learning about new opportunities and successes for and by our community!
